Ten Fingers and Ten Toes

So, tonight is kind of a big night, because we get to find out if you are a boy or girl! I am very excited and very nervous, which seems to be a theme with anything involving you, haha. I know it seems a little early, but, apparently, a blood test from the mother can determine your sex sooner than the 12-week ultrasound. How cool is that?! The test was also for any genetic abnormalities, but you are low risk for everything, and I couldn't be happier! You passed your first test with flying colors. We kind of knew your risk of anything fishy would be low though, because your father is Jewish and I'm African-American, which is quite the spectrum. Had we both been, say Ashkenazi Jews or had ancestry that hailed from the same region of African, then there might have been some problems. Checkmate, genetic diversity.

Neither your father nor I really care which what your sex is, always remember that, but I am kind of hoping you're a girl only because I've had the perfect name picked out for years, (Mina), and it's a lovely blend of my mom's and your father's mom's names. Fun fact: Your grandmother, Nina, doesn't actually like her own name. Weird, right? I haven't met many people that don't like their own name. I hope you like yours, whatever it end ups being. Your father is leaning more towards boy, because he feels like he'd be able to relate to you better. But, if you're a girl, that's okay, because I will walk him through the intricacies of femininity and make sure he can always understand and relate to you, no matter what. However, your father thinks he is a lucky man so he also thinks that, because I don't have a boy name picked out that he likes, you'll be a girl, so that he's free of that responsibility. I liked Jacub, yes with a "u," because it was both Jewish and Christian, similar to your father's, and the cute letter change meant I could call you my "wolf cub," since your last name will be Wolfson. I thought it was fun and unique, but not too unique, but your dad doesn't like it; he's such a stick in the mud. You are unique, so I wanted a name that reflected that; I'm so tired of Bob, Bill, and Mike! I've threatened to name you Joseph if he doesn't choose a name, since he hates that idea, but his mother also doesn't like it. She claims that it goes against Jewish religion to name your child after someone living, however, Joseph does not follow the Jewish religion, so I don't care...she also really has no say in this, haha. If you are a boy and you do end up Joseph somehow, I'm sure she'll be mad for a few seconds and then promptly get over it.

I also toyed around with the name Luke, which is Christian, but I don't want people thinking we're huge Star Wars fans, because we're not. I also want to save you from "Luke, I am your father" jokes for the rest of your life. What's more, there was a sweet boy that I had known since seventh grade that took his own life my Senior year of high school, and his name was Luke. I don't want people thinking you were named after him, even though I don't really mind the connection, but I'm also worried about the suicide connotation.

Whatever you are, I just hope you are healthy and that you have " all ten fingers and ten toes," as they say.
